I kind of knew this behavior occurs, but I did not realize the extreme extent to which
a person can adapt to mind-blowing monotony. Monotony, to the extent that electrical engineer Dave Givens will car commute
daily from the outskirts of Yosemite National Park all the way to San Jose in far-away silicon valley. That entails a round-trip distance of around 200 miles as the crow flies but over 370 miles following a more circuitous route.

And as the
commenters at TOD note, he works for Cisco, a large networking products company, and one that easily could consider setting up a telecommuting arrangement, given that Givens has done this for the
past 17 years.
